Meet my six brand-new artist brush boxes that I hand painted with animal motifs, using acrylic colors. Used to store pencils and brushes (or gummy bears, for that matter), the boxes are 28 cm long, 14 cm wide, and 4.5 cm high, and come in unique designs. Check out the images below for close-up views.

Here’s how they were made:

1. I treated myself with six bamboo artist brush boxes (that was the easy part).
2. Unfortunately, the flexible lid had the engraved silhouette image of a bamboo tree on it, which sucked. It required a great amount of beveling to get rid of it. In aiming to get the paint to adhere to the surfaces, I used sand paper on all sides.
3. I subsequently applied molding paste to cover up some of the crevices on the lid, and coated all sides using white acrylic primer – I needed to do this three times (ugh).
4. THEN came the color, at last. I used a variety of acrylic colors for the various undercoats before painting the animals on all sides.
5. After drying up, I used sandpaper to abrade, however loosely, some of the spots where I felt too much paint was applied. This process also introduced slightly grungy streaks to the surface, which helped attain that vintage look, turning the designs lively and animated.
6. The last step was to apply matte varnish on all sides for permanent protection.

Baseline is, I had a great deal of fun working on this, as I’m sure you can see ;-)

Here is is my animated ecard for this year which has just been completed. I also did wrote the soundtrack which includes a string orchestra and a harp. Happy Christmas everyone!

This oversized über-glossy calendar featuring my artwork arrived in today’s mail :-)

A bunch of postcards promoting selected illustrations of mine have just arrived from the printer’s. While the front side shows an illustration without type, the back side specifies in lively collage style where that artwork was published. The images displayed here show both views side by side.

Top: My illustration and jacket design for Richard David Precht’s Who am I – and if so, how many?, an introduction to philosophy which has been a major bestseller in Europe, with sales in Germany alone currently exceeding one million copies. The illustration shows a little boat crossing the ocean, and emitting steam in the shape of a questionmark. Currently being translated into English by the wonderful Shelley Frisch, the book will hit US and UK shelves next year.
Below: My cover art for a US banking magazine showing Tarzan in the jungle, lifting some weights. This one was on the topic of regulatory jungles.

Bottom: My cover design in bold colors for LatinFinance magazine on the financial crisis. It shows a couple of people using ropes in trying to keep a corporate building from tumbling down a cliff.

not gotten affected by the crisis, isn’t it?”

So you’ve been struck by the financial crisis? Well, so has the guy in this lively mixed-media illustration, empty pockets and all. Note how a tiny bull and a bear are taken by the wind in the background.

Well,  whaddaya know? The Little Bestiary of Wonders, a book on quirky animal behavior by Dirk Steffens that I illustrated, was once again featured on German television.

After Pro Sieben’s coverage two weeks ago, the book was shown on ZDF television – on Markus Lanz, a popular late-night show, and on the daily breakfast show, Volle Kanne. Here are some screenshots to prove it :-)

And while we’re at it, here are a few more excerpts from the book – taken from the chapter on the creepy angler fish.

Anglerfisch. Populärname: Tiefsee -Anglerfisch. Wissenschaftlicher Name: Edriolychnus schmidti. Lebensraum: Tiefsee, 200 bis 4000 Meter tief. Größe: Weibchen 20 Zentimeter, Männchen 2 Zentimeter. Kuriosum: Männchen ist Parasit des Weibchens.

Oh, wie romantisch! Es gibt sie anscheinend wirklich, die ewige  Liebe im Tierreich! Seit die Art vor Äonen in der Schwärze der Tiefsee entstand, hat sich kein einziges Anglerfischpärchen je getrennt. Kein einziges! Denn für diese obskur anzuschauenden Wesen gilt wirklich und buchstäblich das alte Versprechen: bis dass der Tod sie scheidet!

Die ungewöhnliche Treue der ungleichen Partner – er ist zwei Zentimeter klein, sie ungefähr zehnmal so groß – ist den Härten eines Lebens in der Tiefsee geschuldet. Im absolut lichtlosen Unterwasser – Universum weit jenseits der 200-Meter-Marke ist es nämlich verdammt schwierig, überhaupt irgendeinen Artgenossen zu finden. Da helfen auch die kleinen Laternen kaum, die den Weibchen an einer Rute aus dem Leib wachsen und die sie als Köder vor ihrem mit spitzen Zähnen bewehrten Maul aufleuchten lassen können.

Kommt es trotz der widrigen Umstände zu einer der seltenen intersexuellen Begegnungen, machen die Anglerfische keine halben Sachen. Sie verplempern ihre Zeit nicht mit dem üblichen Guck-mal-meine-bunten-Federn / Ist-das-nicht-ein-prächtiges-Gehörn / Ich-kann-am-lautesten-brüllen / Mein-Porsche-ist-tiefergelegt-Getue anderer paarungswilliger Männchen. O nein! Er beißt sich einfach an ihr fest und lässt nie wieder los. Relativ schnell verwachsen die beiden dann miteinander: Seine Kiefer bilden sich zurück, er schlüpft buchstäblich zu ihr unter die Haut, und schließlich vereinen sich sogar die Blutgefäße der Ehefische. Nur die Kiemen bleiben ihm. Ansonsten lebt er von nun an als Parasit in ihr – und kann den Körper der Wirtin nie mehr verlassen.

Der Preis für den weiblichen All-inclusive-Service: Wenn sie stirbt, ist auch sein Leben zu Ende. Bis zu diesem Tag bestimmt sie über sein Schicksal – und sein Sexleben: Die Befruchtung der Eier erfolgt nämlich außerhalb des Körpers, und zwar nur dann, wenn sie es will. Mit Hilfe von Hormonen, die über den gemeinsamen Blutkreislauf in seinen Körper strömen, steuert sie die gleichzeitige Abgabe von Eiern und Spermien.
