artists working on DER SPIEGEL covers, including myself.
m Herbst 2004 beauftragte DER
SPIEGEL bei mir einen Entwurf für das Titelbild
zum Thema "Jammertal Ost".
Meine Zeichnung entstand in Anlehnung an Saul Steinbergs berühmtem Cover
"View from 9th Ave" für den "New Yorker" aus den
Siebziger Jahren und
illustriert, wie der Boden unter verschiedenen Wahrzeichen des Ostens –
Brandenburger Tor, Fernsehturm am Alex, Dresdner Frauenkirche, Brocken,
Leipziger Messeturm und Plattenbauten –, wegbricht.
Im Hintergrund
erkennt man man "westliche" Wahrzeichen wie die Münchner
Frauenkirche oder den Kölner Dom sowie "den Rest der Welt".

ER
SPIEGEL, Germany's largest and most influential weekly news
magazine, contracted a cover illustration in the fall of 2004 on the topic of East-German
disintegration.
I designed the image after Saul Steinberg's
famous 1970's "View from 9th Ave" cover for the New Yorker magazine. It
shows prominent Eastern landmarks colliding as the ground gives away.
My illustration on the topic of
"Jammertal Ost" has
been created using ink, pencil, and the computer.
Bei
der Arbeit an dem Bild wurde ich von einem Filmteam
des SPIEGEL in meinem
Atelier gefilmt. Dieses Material wurde für einen Videoclip
von SPIEGEL TV verwendet, das während der Ausstellung
"Die Kunst des SPIEGEL - Titel-Illustrationen aus fünf
Jahrzehnten" vom 5. November 2004 bis 23. Januar 2005
in den Deichtorhallen Hamburg gezeigt wurde.

Weitere Stationen der Ausstellungstournee
waren Berlin, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, München und zum Abschluss
im Januar 2006 das "Museum of American Illustration" in New York.

A film
team from DER SPIEGEL had me filmed during the process of
designing the illustration.
Extracts from that session were used for a SPIEGEL TV video clip which
was shown at the
well-known Deichtorhallen museum in November in an exhibition commemorating 50 years of
SPIEGEL cover illustration art.
The exhibition started out in
Hamburg, and then moved on to various German cities. It was also shown at the Museum of American Illustration in
New York in
January of
2006.
