I have been a regular contributor to Süddeutsche Zeitung from very early on in my career. These days,  artwork I create for this daily paper comes in large size and full color, as opposed to black and white years ago. I am showcasing some of my recent work here.

In 2012, I have received a European Newspaper Award of Excellence for four pieces I did for Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Feature: Wine (June 2013)

This is my summer cover for Süddeutsche Zeitung's three-monthly SZ-Vinothek wine supplement that got printed both in a tabloid newspaper format, and on a glossy wine brochure. I created the cover art for the summer edition that shows a group of people sitting under a beautiful tree, drinking wine and enjoying a sunny day.

Feature: E-Book Writers (Apr 2013)

I have illustrated an article for a Süddeutsche Zeitung weekend special (SZ Wochenende) on e-book writers, showing on a full page multiple writers crowding an e-book reading device, and chipping in to write a novel together.

This is my spring cover for Süddeutsche Zeitung's three-monthly SZ-Vinothek wine supplement that got printed both in a tabloid newspaper format, and on a glossy wine brochure. I created the cover art for the spring edition that shows a bunch of wine barrels laying around in-between daffodils and spring snowflakes. I also made an interior illustration showing a your woman who can't decide between red and white wine.

Feature: Angry People (Nov 2012)

I have illustrated an article for a Süddeutsche Zeitung weekend special (SZ Wochenende) on "Wutbürger" (enraged citizens) who take to the streets in protest of controversial issues. For the full page, I illustrated a large crane swinging a massive demolition ball crowded with little protesters.

This is my winter cover for Süddeutsche Zeitung's three-monthly SZ-Vinothek wine supplement that got printed both in a tabloid newspaper format, and on a glossy wine brochure. I created the cover art for this edition and an interior illustration showing a couple dreaming of far-away travels.

I have illustrated an article written by Willi Winkler for a Süddeutsche Zeitung weekend special (SZ Wochenende) dealing with people who are feeling at ease with their particular cultures from different regions of Germany. I have showcased five different "prototypes" for the various regions here, which range from Bavaria to Berlin.

Feature: Olympia (July 2012)

This collage piece was made for Süddeutsche Zeitung to illustrate a supplement on the upcoming Olympic Games in London. The five Olympic rings make for the shape of a lion, with a variety of athetes doing their thing in and around those rings.

Here's a full-size spread I did for Süddeutsche Zeitung's "Wochenende" (weekend) edition for an article that pleads to appreciate mistakes made on construction sites. I designed a large scaffolding full of little workers doing everything wrong they possibly can.

Book Series: Library of Humor (Sept 2011)

I have created the cover art for the Süddeutsche Zeitung Bibliothek des Humors (Library of Humor), an edition of 20 all-time favorite humorous novels edited by Süddeutsche Zeitung, Germany's largest newspaper.

Authors for this collection of humor classics by one of the funniest writers today include Woody Allen, Peter Ustinov, P.G. Wodehouse, and Heinrich Böll. >more

This book from Süddeutsche Zeitung Edition publishers is a quirky look on the world of emotions—from pride and revenge to schadenfreude and shame, from bewilderment and desire to voluptuousness and envy. My cover illustration assembles selected emotions from the book in whimsical style. I created 25 two-colored illustrations for the individual chapters on the following topics. >more

This multilayered illustration was created for Süddeutsche Zeitung on the topic of sustainable energy. It's pretty intricate, but you can spot a lighthouse, trees, the sea, a kite, wind generators, a power plant, the sun, and the like.

In this expansive four-page feature for Süddeutsche Zeitung, I created half a dozen whimsical-style illustrations for a special on derivatives. I decided to stick to black and dark blue for the artwork that includes an info-graphic design explaining what derivatives are.

This animated collage-style illustration for Süddeutsche Zeitung illustrates the topic of cross-country energy distribution, and employs geometrical cut-out shapes dealing with forms of energy and distribution networks.

This pretty intricate and multilayered illustration for Süddeutsche Zeitung was created for the SZ-Vinothek wine supplement. I used a lot of warm colors to suggest Italy, France, food, sun, coffee etc.

In my latest assignment for Süddeutsche Zeitung, I have composed a cadavre exquis for the career section that runs across a major part of the page.

This formerly surrealist concept works with folded pages; the top parts showing the head of a person or animal, the middle parts the torso, and the bottom parts the legs.

My "exquisite corpse" shown below was designed in a slightly three-dimensional fashion. It consists of a cowboy, a crocodile, a gorilla, a robot, a little boy, a tree, a skirt, and a fish.

In another assignment for Süddeutsche Zeitung, I have created a number of illustrations on world market leaders. The four-page extra features interviews with market leaders in a variety of different branches.

I came up with a large splash illo in collage style and a bunch of circle-shaped icons that visualize the various branches (wind turbines, toys, etc.). I also designed colorful silkscreen print emulations of the enterpreneurs that got interviewed.
